Lisbon with the family
Some cities ask families to compromise. Lisbon isn’t one of them. It’s compact, sunny and endlessly characterful, with just the right mix of wonder for children and ease for the grown-ups. And the sea is never far away.
Why it works
Lisbon is walkable, warm and full of theatre: rattling yellow trams, a hilltop castle, funiculars up the steep streets, and pastéis de nata on every corner. The distances are short, the pace is gentle, and there’s a beach within half an hour when energy runs low.
For younger children
The trams and funiculars are an adventure in themselves. São Jorge Castle has ramparts to climb and peacocks to chase; the Oceanário is among Europe’s finest aquariums; and the riverside at Belém has space to run, with a custard tart as the reward.
For older children and teenagers
A sunset sail on the Tagus, a surf lesson on the coast at Carcavelos or Cascais, an afternoon meeting the wild dolphins south of the city. Lisbon does the kind of real experiences that win teenagers over.
Beyond the city
Sintra’s fairytale palaces feel made for children’s imaginations, the coast is lined with easy beaches, and the whole region is close enough to keep days short and tempers long. We’re always careful to build in the unscheduled time that family trips actually need.
The grown-ups, too
The art of a great family trip is that the adults travel well also. We weave in the long lunches, the good wine and the quiet evenings. So everyone, from the youngest to the grandparents, comes home happy.
Planning it
Multi-generation travel is one of our favourite things to design. See how we approach group and family journeys. The key is a pace that works for every age, and someone local handling the details so you don’t have to.
Tell us who’s coming and roughly when, and we’ll shape a Lisbon the whole family will remember. Start a conversation, and let’s plan it together.
