Dolphin Watching from Lisbon
A private day in the south: the green hills of the Arrábida, a fishing village on a calm bay, and a catamaran out among the wild dolphins of the Sado.
South of Lisbon, the Sado estuary is home to a resident pod of wild bottle-nose dolphins: one of the few places in Europe you can reliably find them. Your private day crosses the river into the green Arrábida hills; then a catamaran carries you onto the water, where the dolphins surface and play entirely on their own terms.
A day drawn around the highlights
Wild dolphins of the Sado
A 3-hour catamaran cruise in search of the estuary's resident pod of bottle-nose dolphins, in their own wild waters.
The Arrábida Natural Park
The scenic mountain road through one of Portugal's most beautiful parks. Green hills meeting a turquoise sea.
Sesimbra by the sea
Time in a working fishing village on a sheltered bay, where the boats still come in with the day's catch.
A day at your own pace
Private on land, with your own guide and driver: the cruise aside, the day bends to whatever you most want to see.
Everything taken care of
In every private departure
- A private local guide and driver, for your party alone
- Hotel pick-up and drop-off in Lisbon
- A 3-hour catamaran dolphin-watching cruise (shared boat)
- The land day shaped to your pace, nothing rushed
Private, by the car
One price for your whole party, not per person. Choose the car that suits you; your guide and the day are the same.
Meals are not included. Lunch by the sea is at your own expense, and we're glad to recommend the best table. The catamaran cruise is included, though it is a shared departure rather than a private charter.
Questions, answered
How long is the day?
About 7 hours, door to door, with pick-up and drop-off at your Lisbon hotel. Roughly three of those hours on the water, the rest exploring the Arrábida and the coast.
Are dolphins guaranteed?
They're wild, so nothing on the water is ever certain. But the Sado estuary has a resident pod of bottle-nose dolphins, so the odds are genuinely good, especially in the warmer months.
Is the boat private?
The land day is entirely yours. Your own car, guide and pace. The catamaran cruise is a shared departure with other guests; if you'd prefer a private boat, tell us and we'll look into a charter for you.
Best time to go?
The cruises run from spring through autumn, with the calmest seas and the best sightings from late spring to early autumn. Tell us your dates and we'll help you choose a good one.
Can you take a larger group?
Yes, for larger groups we arrange a private coach with your guide. Tell us your numbers and we'll tailor it.
