Dolphins in the Sado estuary near Lisbon

Where to see dolphins and whales near Lisbon

Portugal’s relationship with the ocean runs deep, and some of its most moving encounters happen on the water. Whether you have an afternoon or a week, there’s a way to meet the dolphins and whales of the Atlantic. And two very different ways to do it.

Just south of Lisbon: the Sado dolphins

A short drive south of the city, the Sado estuary near Setúbal is home to a resident pod of wild bottle-nose dolphins: one of the few places in Europe you can reliably find them. It makes a beautiful day trip from Lisbon: a catamaran onto calm water, the green hills of the Arrábida all around, and dolphins surfacing on their own terms. We fold it into a wider day of wine and coast, see our dolphin-watching day.

A flight away: the Azores

For the great whales, the Azores are among the finest places on earth. Sperm whales stay year-round; the migrating giants (blue, fin and sei whales), pass through in spring. These are deep-ocean waters where the animals have never had to fear a boat, and the encounters are unforgettable. It’s a short flight from Lisbon, and worth every minute.

The best season

Off Lisbon, the dolphins are present year-round, with the calmest seas and warmest days from late spring to early autumn. In the Azores, April and May are unmatched for the migrating whales, though the season runs well into autumn.

A word on doing it well

These are wild animals, and nothing on the water is ever guaranteed. We work only with operators who keep a respectful distance: the encounters are better for it, and so is the conscience.

Whether it’s an afternoon with the Sado dolphins or a week among the whales of the Azores, we’ll build it beautifully. Start a conversation, and let’s get you on the water.
